quick take: pso
f0newearl:
pengummo:
not sure if i want to pony up the money to rack down a broadband adapter and then hook that broadband adapter to a wireless modem so i can play this game potentially with someone else on the internet maybe on a hack server. but i think it would be fun to stream the gameplay to all my badgers and mmo bros.
If you’re looking to play with more people online, might I suggest...

quick take: pso
yes, im talking about the year 2000 console online rpg Phantasy Star Online. or rather its gamecube port released in 2002 i recently managed to acquire. (sadly, it is not the Plus version released in 2003.)
on the surface its a really old, slightly obtuse diablo1 married with a console jrpg. so far i think it works. theres an emphasis on consumables, and which race, class, and gender you pick for...

lotro and tsw and tera oh my!
its starting to look like 2013 for pengummo will be about f2p mmos. im already wading through lotro and i got TSW during christmas and now it looks like i need to get a copy of tera to secure my founder status when it goes f2p.
reality has finally caught up to players and developers: it doesn’t cost that much to keep the servers online. its gonna be an amazing year where the only people who...

2012 mmo year review
this post contains the mmos i played in the year 2012, and what i thought of them
[[MORE]]swtor: if it costs that much money to make fully voiced fetch quests and kill 10 spaceboar quests, maybe you should rethink your business model. a themepark mmo where half the rides arent finished and story choices you make have no impact on the story. im not convinced the hero engine is a good choice to...

a brief thought on gw2's new carrot
ascended gear/infusion/agony is anet bringing back some of the worst elements of gw1 pve to gw2. its also pretty much violating their mmo manifesto. attempts to argue otherwise are just twisting logic around the spirit of what it represents, in a game that already has too many useless item and level tiers.
id be more upset about it, but i dont log onto gw2 anymore because the ‘levelling...

hiatus
if youve been wondering why i havent been posting lately (and i know you are) its because cant handle just how bad diablo 3 and guild wars 2 turned out
i had high expectations for both, particularly for their design and mechanics to shine through. and instead they kind of fell flat and fell short of their intended goals, and there is no quick fix in sight.
so instead im going to focus my efforts...

a guild wars 2 'review'
you cant really give a full review for guild wars 2, just because its massive size and scope means only the most dedicated players have explored all it in breadth and depth. but at the same time after spending hours with the game you can still gather a general impression of the game to your tastes and begin to really critique the work as a whole.
for the short judgement of the game ill quote...

someone please stop all the big numbers
today i heard about some game developer drama involving the head ‘idea guy’ behind diablo 1 and 2 backtalked the diablo 3 team in an interview today, and normally id feel compelled to defend the diablo 3 team — though not for their maturity on their facebook replies. diablo 3 has its flaws, yes, but its not like diablo 2 hasnt lead many games down the wrong path.
but then today...

orcs must die 1&2 review
often i find myself staring at my list of steam games that i havent ever installed or played and pretend im going to install one and play it. sometimes i actually do that.
on the eve of orcs must die 2, but before any real advertising effort by robot entertainment, i found myself staring at the orcs must die listing on my steam list and tried it out, and found it was quite a decent game. being...

Imagine vanquishing somewhere. You’re in a party of 8, making a careful path across the map as you kill foes. You get to the last area you haven’t been, kill the monsters…and no golden helmet pops up on your screen. You’ve missed a group. The little white bar showing your…

the flaws in guild wars 1
with the advent of guild wars 2 i feel its time enough to give my thoughts on guild wars 1. while ive talked about some of the joys of the game in prior posts, i feel its important to point out its flaws as well.

diablo 3 review
after a rocky start, i finally got to sink my teeth into diablo 3 this weekend. on the whole its has been a positive experience. if you’re a fan of killing monsters in a fantasy setting with friends (or strangers) you owe it to yourself to check this game out, however the game isn’t without it’s flaws.
[[MORE]]diablo 3’s greatest strength is it’s skill system. the...
